In 1914 Galway was a mostly rural, agricultural county, seemingly in decline. Despite a decrease in emigration, and in contrast with the growth experienced by the rest of the country, Galway’s population had fallen from 192,549 to 182,224 between the censuses of 1901 and 1911. In Galway City, the decline in population was linked to the decline of its industry.
